In the last 25 years, communication technology has promoted cultural changes in almost all societies. Communication technologies such as the cell phone, the Internet, TV, and all other forms of communication tools has affected people of all age groups, and has impacted the way in which group communicate. In Saudi society, when communication technology first appeared, almost everyone in Saudi Arabia rejected those strange inventions. There are two basic reasons Saudis initially rejected this communication technology: First, because they thought that those inventions would conflict with the Islamic religion; secondly, they thought that those inventions would change their culture in a negative way. However, a few people accepted and used those inventions because they traveled outside the country and they were open-minded. Most people still rejected communication technology until the cell phone appeared. After the cell phone appeared, people tried to obtain a cell phone as quickly as possible. Their use of cell phones became the first kind of communication technology used in Saudi Arabia. Because of a successful experience with cell phone, most people began to accept other forms of communication technology. Communication technology has had a significant positive impact on Saudi culture, especially in the areas of social interaction, social activities, and Saudi education system. First and most importantly, communication technology has significantly influenced on the Saudi society through the social interaction. It has changed the social interaction in Saudi Arabia through making the family members close to each other, creating a new kind of relationship between males and females, connecting the user of the internet to like-minded people, and limiting social visitation and creating social isolation. Communication technology, in particular cell phones, has affected the family interaction in the Saudi society in the last 15 yeas. It makes the family members close to each other. According to a study by a graduate student, Hameededdin Noor, at the school of communication in the American university at Washington, DC, the study shows that cell phone promotes the feelings of " parents' obedience", in particular a son who got married and did not live with his parents in the same house. Thus, cell phone makes the parents to be happy because of the constant communication from their sons (Hameededdin). Moreover, communication technology has created a relationship between males and females even though it is prohibited in the Saudi society because of religion issues. Another study conducted in Saudi Arabia by Al-Saggaf Yeslam with the purpose of understanding how online communities are affecting offline communities, the study found that there is an interesting social effect of communication technology, in particular internet. The author confirms that internet provides a communication place between males and females in a sexual discrimination society. Al-Saggaf also states that this communication between males and females has positive and negative effects. Some of its positive effects are making people accept and consider other people's ideas and opinions, being more aware, and being more self-confident. In contrast, making people less shy and wasting their time are considered negatives effects of this communication (Al-Saggaf). Furthermore, people who use the internet can speak with other people who have shared properties; whereas before internet appearing, they could not have done that. A study by Sait Sadiq et al., the professors at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, that examined the influences of internet on the Saudi society found that communication technology, in particular internet, enables people in Saudi Arabia to communicate with people who have similar interests and opinions, such as relatives, people in the same career, and people sharing similar activities ( Sait, "Trends"). On the other hand, communication technology in Saudi Arabia has limited the social visitation and created social isolation. Hameededdin observes that people are using communication technology, in particular cell phones, to communicate with each other instead of social visitation that was an important part of the Saudi social life. In addition, Users sacrifice other important activities for the sake of internet usage. For example, it has promoted eLearning, knowledge sharing between universities' students and learning English as a second language. Communication technology promotes eLearning in Saudi Arabia. Students now accept the idea of taking courses online. Sait et al. reveal that the most important reason which encourages students to take courses on internet is that they like to use computers. The authors also reveal other reasons, For example, people like to take courses from their own houses, new experience and fun, some courses are not available on the country, and some students complete their high degree through internet (Sait, "Use"). Moreover, communication technology is one of the best ways to promote knowledge sharing between students. A well know research by Eid Mustafa and Nuhu Nuraddeen, which explained the impact of information technology and learning culture on knowledge sharing of Saudi students, observes that information technology use play an important role in knowledge sharing between students in Saudi universities.
